Alternative Grading Institute FAQ

What is the primary goal of the Institute?
To provide an intensive, supportive environment in which participants will design or refine an alternative grading scheme aligned with their values and course context.
Who should apply?
Faculty who have either experimented with alternative grading or are ready to commit to making a change. This is not an introductory “why grading matters” workshop—it’s for people who want to operationalize their values.
How much time should I expect to commit?
Pre-work: ~2–3 hours (readiness assessment, short readings, reflection).
Institute: Two full programming days (approx. 5–6 hours each, designed to accommodate multiple time zones).
Optional: Continued engagement with peers and facilitators afterward.
What kinds of pre-work will I do?
Readings on grading history and practices, completing a readiness self-assessment, and preparing to share a syllabus or course outline.
How are participants selected?
Selection balances clarity of goals, alignment with alternative grading practices, and diversity across institutions, disciplines, course types, and student populations.
What if I’m new to alternative grading?
That’s fine! You don’t need prior experience, just a willingness to learn and revise your grading scheme.
Is the Institute online or in person?
The 2025 Institute will be fully online. Future years may rotate between online and in-person formats.
